Cathedral City was first formed when Henry Washington, of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, discovered the canyons in the land. He believed that they resembled the interior of a grand cathedral, leading to the city’s name and the naming of Cathedral Canyon.
In 1925, the area was seen as beneficial to many developers and they began building Cathedral City. The city was not incorporated for another 56 years in 1981. This provided all inhabitants of the land a quality of life and a great location for residents to commute into the bigger cities for work.
The city is located between two large interstate highways. This brings in constant tourism that contributes to the economy of the town. Cathedral City ranks in the top three cities in Coachella Valley in all aspects including retail sales, population and total taxable sales.
Because of the city’s location, businesses view Cathedral City as a triangle of opportunity between Los Angeles and San Diego. It lays equidistant from both cities resulting in the growing metropolis area.
